Poem on the Autism Spectrum

The autism umbrella is a vast spectrum   Not a medical illness full of symptoms Sadly people view autistics' behaviours as a problem  But they are not a broken fraction   Rather, just a different operating system Autistics behaviours have reasons, they're not  random   They should be accepted as a normal variation of the human kingdom If we understand autistics' brains' algorithm We will see their uniqueness enriches life's  rhythm  With love and patience they can  blossom If given the right environment With good  momentum  Instead of force fitting into social  customs Or confining them to asylums Their self-expression deserves  freedom Every colour on the spectrum   Makes the world colourful like light through a prism Interacting with them is enriching, no boredom Neurodiversity is essential to humanity like biodiversity to the ecosystem  Or diverse notes to songs' rhythms   Or the diverse seasons of spring, sum...

Poem for "A Very Special Walk" 2024, signature fundraising programme of Autism Resource Centre (Singapore)

Almost every year we have "A Very Special Walk Where we put on our socks Walk or run from from block to block No competition no need to watch the clock All just for a common cause In 2020 came the COVID-19 panademic Causing nationwide panic For some it was even traumatic With social distancing rules so rigid A fundraising event like this no longer could be so systematic   But undeterred, we switched to virtual  challenges no less authentic   With everyone's creativity we became more dramatic Not more timid Everyone could participate in a virtual challenge, from running or swimming for the  athletic To dancing for the  kinaesthetic To sports for those with muscles  kinetic To intellectual feats for those with skills like drawing, language or mathematics   Each challenge was organic Completed with unique tactics Some even majestic  COVID-19 crisis did not pull us apart, we became more synergic For donations we continued to solicit All in all, the re...

POEM: I May Not Look At You But I am Listening, I May Not Talk but I am Responding

A note from the Poet, Wesley Loh: This Poem is dedicated to my beloved autism community. I intend to capture/express some of things we go through inside us.  To our non-speaking autistics counterparts: We feel your pain of the misconceptions people have of you. It is tough living in a world where your way of communication is different from the mainstream.  This poems also seeks to be a voice for you to some extent (especially the 2nd segment), debunking common myths of non-speaking autistics and helping the world understand the inner thoughts and feelings that are going on inside you that you otherwise don't vocalise.  Given that I am a speaking autistic, I don't think my poem does justice to fully represent you and your thoughts, but do know I tried my best and that we are all a part of each other as fellow autistics from the same beloved community. The Neurodiversity Movement need not divide us, on the contrary, it unites us! Title: I May Not Look At You But I am Listen...

Autism Acceptance Month - a Poem in remembrance of this special occasion

Autism Acceptance 2020 Poem This month we celebrate Autism Acceptance This annual occasion never turns into one of obsolescence But is one we await with renewed expectance What does this really mean in essence Awareness is already omnipresent What we need so dearly is acceptance Kindness, love and affection All too often we autistics find others keeping a distance Or denying us into that their social circle an admittance Because they don’t understand our difference Must our interaction with the world be met with so much resistance Causing this to accumulate within us a sense of sadness and resentment? Everyone has differing personalities and needs, we are no exception Exercise some patience, compassion and forbearance That we may reciprocate likewise, instead of in vengeance Pardon a bit of awkwardness when into social events we make an entrance Like a party or a wedding reception We are sincere in showing our support through our attendance ...
